Scott’s Late Goal Give Stags 1-0 Win At Manhattan

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – All it takes is one shot. After setting a season-high with 29 shot attempts, it was the final shot that was the only one that mattered as Elle Scott unleashed a shot into the top right corner of the net in the 88th minute to give the Fairfield University Women's Soccer team a 1-0 victory at Manhattan and three more points in the standings.

"I'm pleased with this gritty road win," Head Coach David Barrett said. "We did just enough today to get three points."

The Stags dominated possession of play for the majority of the match, out-shooting the Jaspers 29-7 on the match. Eleven of Fairfield's attempts were on net with six different players notching an attempt on target.

Fairfield started the match by taking 12 of the game's first 13 shots. Ally Filipkowski, Stephanie Tsangaris, and Allie Landino all put shots on net during that span, but all were ultimately saved by Manhattan's goalkeeper Kim Mains. Maddie Kiely had the best chance for the Stags in the first half as she took two shots in a one minute span, with one of those hitting the crossbar.

After taking 12 shots in the first half, the Stags picked up the offensive tempo even more in the second stanza with 17 shots, including the first eight.

The only shot that mattered though came in the 88th minute as Scott created the opportunity with some quick defense. After Hanley Courter sent a cross into the box, a Manhattan defender was able to get a foot to try and clear. Scott rushed towards the defender and stole the ball before the clear and finished the point blank opportunity right at the keeper.

For Scott, it was her team leading seventh goal of the season and her second game-winner. Her seven scores now puts her in a tie for third in the MAAC.

On the defensive side, nothing much got through the back line of Kayla Leary, Caroline Kelly, and Josie Horosky as the Jaspers tallied just seven shots. Only four of those attempts were on target and all were easily saved by Juliette Grasso who picked up her second clean sheet in just her third career start.

Fairfield will stay on the road when they travel to Iona for a matchup against the Gaels on Saturday at noon.
