FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University Women's Basketball team secured a first round bye in the upcoming 2019-20 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championships with a 58-46 victory over Siena on Thursday night. The win brings Fairfield's record to 11-8 in the conference, clinching a top-five finish in the conference.
Nine different Stags recorded a point in a game that the Stags led for all but two minutes. Siena's Sabrina Piper swished through the first bucket of the game with a 3-point field goal, but then the Stags took over. Fairfield tallied 13-straight points capped off by a fast break lineup by
Andrea Hernangomez.
Fairfield would take a 15 point lead at the end of the first quarter on a buzzer beating 3-pointer by
Sam Lewis. The Stags would lead by double figures until the fourth quarter, stretching their lead to as many as 19 on two-straight buckets by
Katie Armstrong.
Siena would climb back to within eight points with 2:51 left in the game, but the Stags held the Saints to just 1-for-5 shooting from the floor for the rest of the game for the victory.
Armstrong led the Stags with a game-high 18 points on 8-for-15 shooting. In her first career start, Hernangomez tallied her second double-double as a Stag with 10 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.
Fairfield out-muscled Siena in the paint with a 32-14 margin with points in the paint. They also out-rebounded the Saints 45-34.
Lou Lopez-Senechal nearly missed double digit rebounds with nine and also dished out a game-high five assists.
The Stags will now look to secure the third-seed in the tournament when they host Niagara in the final game ever played at Alumni Hall. Before the contest, the Stags will honor the two member Class of 2020 with
Sam Kramer and
Nicole Bus for their four years of dedication to the program.
