Stags Close Out Alumni Hall with Senior Day Win

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – For nearly 60 years Alumni Hall has been home not only to the Fairfield University Stags but also countless unforgettable moments. Today, the building saw it's final celebration as the Fairfield University Women's Basketball team closed out its home arena with a 71-49 victory over Niagara on Senior Day. The victory clinched the third seed for the Stags in the upcoming Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championships.

"We've talked all week about how fortunate we are to play the final game here at Alumni Hall," Head Coach Joe Frager said. "We looked at it as a responsibility to all the people who love this building throughout the years. Not just our current students but there are so many people who have fond memories of this place. Not just players but also cheerleaders, parents, fans, and people who have gone to school here throughout the years. There's a lot of history here and we're all very fond of the building. It was important for us to come out and play well."

That's exactly what the Stags did as Lou Lopez-Senechal hit the game's first basket with a 3-pointer 15 seconds into the game and the Stags would never relinquish the lead. The long range shot was also a precursor to a career-high tying 27 points for Lopez-Senechal who hit six 3-pointers, one shy of the program's all-time single game mark. The sophomore connected on five of her first seven attempts, the last of which put the Stags up 16 at 45-29 in the third quarter.

Katie Armstrong also started the game hot as her and Lopez-Senechal combined for 13 of the team's 16 points in the first quarter. The duo also made every field goal for the Stags in the second quarter until Sam Lewis connected on two in the final minute of the half.

After extending the lead to double digits on an Andrea Hernangomez basket one minute into the third quarter, Niagara would not get back within single figures the rest of the way.

Playing in her final home game as a Stag, Sam Kramer tied for the team lead with six assists. In the middle of those helpers, Kramer also collected her 300th career assist, becoming the 17th Stag to reach that mark.

Also in her final home game, graduate student Kendra Landy recorded four assists with just one turnover.

Lopez-Senechal led the Stags with a career-high tying 27 points on 6-for-10 shooting from long range. She also pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds for her second double-double of the season. Armstrong followed Lopez-Senechal with 18 points.

The win marked the 288th all-time for the Stags in Alumni Hall and the 98th under Joe Frager.

Fairfield also extended their conference record to 12-8, clinching the number three seed in the upcoming MAAC Championship which will be held at Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, N.J. The Stags will play on Thursday, March 12 at 12pm against the winner of the No. 6 and No. 11 matchup earlier in the tournament.
