Box Score 1 DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Fairfield University softball team continued its Florida swing with a split against Bethune Cookman. The Stags dropped the opener by a 10-1 score but responded with a 10-2 victory in the second meeting of the day.
In the first game, a two-run homer in the first inning put the home team in front, a lead which was increased with a single run in the bottom of the third inning. Bethune-Cookman put the third run on the scoreboard with a leadoff single, a one-out walk, and a two-out single.
The Stags surrendered seven runs despite yielding just three hits as a pair of errors contributed to the rally. Two of those hits were two-run singles which accounted for more than half of the team's offensive surge. Fairfield posted a run in the fifth inning when
Drew Westford hit a ball that left the ballpark bringing the scoring to a close.
Fairfield fared better in the next game, scoring 10 runs of its own on its way to the fourth win of the season. The Stags scored in each of the first four innings, bringing home three runs in the second, third, and fourth frames. The team scored in its first at-bat with
Amanda Ulzheimer working out a leadoff walk. Westford singled and took second on the throw to third, putting two runners in scoring position.
Kaitlin Hoffman brought home the game's first run with a ground out.
After Bethune-Cookman grabbed the lead in the bottom of the inning, the Stags took the lead for good with three more runs in the second inning, a rally highlighted by
Tahlia Browns' RBI single. Merino and Hoffman also brought home a run with a walk that made the score 4-2.
Fairfield tacked on three more runs in the third inning with Ulzheimer responsible for two of the runs off her two RBI single. The scoring concluded with three more runs in the fourth inning as
Lacey Olaff stroked a two-run double to pace the offense.
Pitcher
Katie Kudlacik tossed all five innings to earn her third win of the season, striking out one and scattering five hits in the victory.
