RIVERDALE, N.Y. – The Fairfield University Women's Basketball team dropped their third-straight game as they fell to the Manhattan Jaspers 51-38 in their final road game of the season. The Stags, who shot 61 percent from 3-point range in the first meeting between the schools this year, shot just five percent from long range today. Fairfield connected on just one of their 19 attempts.
The two teams played even in the first half with neither side able to get a lead more than a few possessions. Manhattan had the first large lead on an 11-2 run early in the first quarter.
Lou Lopez-Senechal scored the first bucket of the game for the Stags but the Stags would only score one more time during the next five minutes.
The Stags scored the final five points of the first quarter with a Lopez-Senechal 3-pointer and a
Katie Armstrong layup. Fairfield grabbed the lead on a 6-0 run in the second quarter.
Callie Cavanaugh's jumper tied the game at 17-17 and Armstrong's jumper gave Fairfield their largest lead at four.
After Manhattan grabbed a brief lead,
Kendra Landy stretched for a layup that gave Fairfield a one point advantage at 25-24 going into halftime.
The Jaspers answered with their own 6-0 run to open the third quarter, a stanza where the Stags would score just six points. Manhattan would take advantage and extend their lead to double digits on an Emily LaPointe 3-pointer with 31 seconds left.
Fairfield would hit another shooting slump in the fourth quarter as they did not hit a field goal for the first four minutes. The only Fairfield points during that time came with a pair of Lopez-Senechal free throws. A traditional 3-point play by Courtney Warley gave the Jaspers their biggest lead of the contest.
The Stags tried getting back into the game with their defense that drew a season-high five charges. Lopez-Senechal led the team in that category by drawing three.
Lopez-Senechal also led the Stags in points (13) and rebounds (seven). It marked the 17th time in 18 MAAC games that the sophomore has reached double figures in scoring.
Armstrong was the only other Fairfield player to reach double digits as she had 10.
The Stags will return home for the final homestand ever at Alumni Hall, beginning with a contest against Siena on Thursday at 7pm.
