SYRACUSE, N.Y.— Fairfield sophomore Sophia Prinos usually comes up with her best performances under pressure. Who can forget her straight-set victory over Quinnipac senior Layla Rodriguez in last year's MAAC final? Or her flight-winning, five-match-victory performance at last fall's West Point Invite?
But today against Colgate the sophomore nursing major from Foxborough, Mass., came out on the short end at No. 5 singles, losing to the Raider's Katerina Atallah 6-7, 6-4, 7-5. The defeat gave Colgate the victory 4-3.
"Credit to Colgate, they played the big points better than us today," said Coach Bricker.
The morning match started out well for the Stags as they secured the doubles point. Playing at No. 2 doubles Francesca Karman and Aina March put the first win on the board for Fairfield as the tandem bested the Raider's Lauren O'Brien and Madi Kiani 6-1. Next to win for Fairfield was the No. 3 pair of Laina Campos and Emily Lombardi who secured the doubles point by defeating Emme Levenson and Emily Untermayer 6-3. At No. 1 doubles Fairfield's Amanda Nowak and Diana Prinos fell to Colgate's Jordan Williams and Rebecca Wolf 7-6 (3). "We came out with a lot of intensity in doubles which was great to see," said Coach Bricker.
In singles Diana Prinos fell to Levenson 6-1, 6-0, while Karman was defeated by Williams 6-1, 6-3. First to put a singles point on the board for the Stags was the reigning MAAC player of the year Nowak who defeated O'Brien 6-3, 7-5. March soon followed with a 7-6 (4), 7-5.
Komer then lost to O'Brien 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 before Sophia finished.
The Stags next travel to Manhattan on Wednesday to face the Columbia Lions at 4 p.m.
