NEW YORK, N.Y. - It's never easy playing an Ivy League team, especially one that just came off an impressive ECAC championship. But Fairfield's task of toppling the Columbia Lions became even tougher today as the reigning MAAC player of the year, sophomore
Amanda Nowak, was injured during warmups and could not play. That said, the Stags fought valiantly at the Dick Savitt Tennis Center on the Upper Westside of Manhattan. In dealing with adversity good things emerged.
The high point of doubles occurred when Fairfield's No. 1 team,
Anna Komer and
Diana Prinos, fought to a draw at 3-3. The match was unfinished as the doubles point was decided when the Stag's No. 2 team, Francessa Karman and
Aina March, fell 6-1 and Fairfield's No. 3,
Laina Campos and
Emily Lombardi, dropped their match 6-0. "Although we lost the doubles point, we actually played fundamentally sound tennis. The scores don't reflect how close the points were. If we can play like that all spring we will be in good shape," said Head Coach
Jeff Bricker.
Overcoming Nowak's loss proved most difficult in singles as all six Fairfield players fell in straight sets. Senior nursing majors, Prinos and
Jessica Pil managed to garner the most games at the No. 1 and No. 5 slots respectively.
Order of Finish
Doubles: 2, 3
Singles: 3, 1, 2, 6, 4, 5
