Matt Turner Listed Among Finalists For MLS Goalkeeper Of The Year

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Matt Turner, a former goalkeeper with the Fairfield University men's soccer program, is a finalist for the Major League Soccer (MLS) Goalkeeper of the Year award. He is one of three MLS players in contention for the honor, joining Philadelphia Union goalkeeper Andre Blake and Columbus Crew SC's goalkeeper Eloy Room.

"I'm thrilled that Matt has been named a finalist for the Allstate MLS Goalkeeper of the Year," Fairfield University Associate Men's Soccer and Goalkeeper Coach Javier Decima said. "He is without a doubt one of the best in the league and has the potential to continue developing. His mentality, work ethic, and desire to improve and learn is what has him this position."

Turner, who finished fifth in last year's voting for this award, comes off one of the finest seasons for any goalkeeper in New England Revolution history. He started 22 of 23 matches for the Revolution, helping New England post its lowest goals against average in team history. He registered a career-best six shutouts and tied his personal-high with eight wins.

He ended the season ranked among the top 10 league goalkeepers for save percentage (.756), goals against average (1.09) and saves (68). He moved up in the Revolution career record book in 2020, securing second in goals against average (1.36), third in career wins with 24, and third in saves (238).
As a member of the Fairfield University men's soccer team, Turner was the team's starting goalkeeper as a junior and as a senior. As a senior, he played in all 18 games in 2015 and recorded a .793 save percentage with a 0.98 goals against average. Turner collected seven shutouts in just over 1750 minutes of action, playing every minute of the season. He earned a berth to the All-Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) second team.

As a junior, Turner led the nation in save percentage by stopping 89 percent of the shots he faced in 2014 (78 saves, 10 goals allowed) and helped the Stags lead the nation in shutout percentage by not allowing a goal in 72 percent of the games in which he played. He ended his season with a 0.50 goals against average. He earned two MAAC defensive player of the week awards and was named to the MAAC All-Tournament team after helping the Stags reach the championship game.

The Allstate MLS Goalkeeper of the Year is determined through voting from three groups: current MLS players, MLS club technical staffs and coaches, and select media members representing local and national outlets.
