McGlinchey's Goal Pushes Men's Soccer Past Saint Joseph's In OT

PHILADELPHIA, Pa.--  Road wins are never easy so when you have a chance to earn one, it's imperative that you secure it. The Fairfield University men's soccer team secured its first victory away from campus with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Saint Joseph's University on Wednesday night.

Midfielder Matt McGlinchey started the night with Fairfield's first shot, an attempt that required a save, and ended the evening with the team's final shot, finishing a penalty kick in the third minute of overtime. The goal was the first for the junior since recording a pair of goals as a freshman, and also represented his first goal from the spot. All three of McGlinchey's career goals have been game winners.

Before McGlinchey finished the game with his shot, the Stags were aggressive up front and attacked with frequency especially with a second-half surge that kept Saint Joseph's in its defensive third. After holding a slight 4-3 edge in shots in the first half, Fairfield nearly tripled the Hawks offensive output in the second half. The Stags registered 14 shots in the second half and held the opposition to just five attempts. McGlinchey's penalty kick was the only shot by either team in extra time.

The play of Saint Joseph's goalkeeper Joseph Boehm was enough to keep Fairfield off the scoreboard during regulation as the sophomore secured 10 saves that the game would remain scoreless through the first 90 minutes.

In fact, Boehm's play at the end of regulation forced the game to head into overtime as the Stags' late pressure nearly finished the match. In a four-minute span, Fairfield put three shots toward the target which a pair of saves. McGlinchey was first up in the attack with an attempt that Boehm stopped in the 85th minute. Colman Kim sent a shot on goal that was knocked away two minutes later by Boehm. Diallo Simon-Ponte finished the flourish with a shot that went wide.

Fairfield goalkeeper Gordon Botterill, fresh off his 15-save performance in a 1-1 draw with Rhode Island last weekend, made three saves to collect the clean sheet. The junior faced eight shots in the game.

"We were resilient in defense and tenacious in attack tonight," Head Coach Carl Rees said. "Our side showed a relentless work ethic throughout the game. We deserved t game by remaining positive throughout the match."

Fairfield will return to the pitch this weekend by hosting Stony Brook University for the first home game of the 2019 campaign. The two teams will start the match at 7 pm at Lessing Field.
