Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's Soccer Upended By #21 New Hampshire

FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- The Fairfield University men's soccer dropped a 4-0 decision to the University of New Hampshire at Lessing Field this evening as the Wildcats turned a 1-0 halftime edge and posted three goals in a 17-minute span of the second half to close out the victory.

The visitors pushed forward from the onset and kept Fairfield back on its side of the pitch through opening minutes. The game's first goal came in the ninth minute when the Wildcats were awarded a throw-in on the far touch line, about 30 yards from goal. Jonny Wolf threw the ball near the front of the box where Josh Bauer headed the ball on to the feet of Fabian Lutz. The midfielder drove the ball back toward the far corner of the goal from about four yards away that beat goalkeeper Gordon Botterill.

The Stags had a few chances in the first half but a fraction of a second was all that separated from Fairfield converting those opportunities. The best example came in the 25th minute when defender Marcus Nordgard controlled the ball on the right flank and cut diagonally toward goal. He sent a hard cross from 25 yards away which Jonathan Filipe anticipated. The forward made a valiant effort to get his head on the cross by diving across the center of the box but the ball just eluded him and resulted in a goal kick.

Fernando Robayo also nearly used his head to put the Stags on the board on a play that was reminiscent of his game-tying goal against Stony Brook last weekend. The ball came from a distance on the left flank which sent Robayo in motion to try and collect the cross. He managed to get his body in position to flick the ball with a quick turn of his head but goalkeeper Alejandro Robles was in position to make the save. Fairfield would finish the game with four shots, two attempts in each half, and put two of those shots on target.

The game was undone midway through the second half, a run that started with a solid effort from Lutz who once again found open space inside the penalty area and drilled a low shot that caught the far corner to double the Wildcats advantage in the 66th minute. Jack Doherty added New Hampshire's third goal in the 76th minute as he secured the ball 40 yards from goal and made a hard diagonal cut between two Fairfield defenders which sprung him for a one-on-one chance against Botterill. The junior came off his line to cut down the angle but Doherty was able bend a shot that found the back of the net. The final goal of the game was a result of a turnover deep in the Stags' end that Rory O'Driscoll found and sent back toward an open goal.

Botterill finished the game with four saves while Robles and Tomeu Pocovi combined for the clean sheet off a pair of saves.

Fairfield will start a two-game in-state road trip next week that starts on Wednesday night with a short run to Yale University for a 7 pm game. The Stags will close out the week with a match at the University of Hartford on Saturday, September 21 beginning at 4 pm.
