CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. -- The Fairfield University field hockey upset
13th-ranked Boston College by scoring twice in the fourth quarter before posting the game-winning goal just two minutes into overtime, coming away with a 3-2 win over the Eagles. The victory evened up the Stags overall record with its comeback victory.
"I am proud of this team," Head Coach
Jackie Kane said. "We are young and hungry and that showed this afternoon. We played without some of our key players from last year and the team really stepped up. This team is tight as a unit on and off the field. We showed that with our tough defense and our refusal to give in or give up."
Boston College started the game with an aggressive attack that resulted in 15 shots in the first 15 minutes of the game. Goalkeeper
Zoe Rosen was able to defend her goal with seven saves, but did yield one goal during the opening quarter barrage. Fusine Govaert scored the game's first goal with a shot that started off a penalty corner.
In the second quarter, the Eagles continued to hold most of the play in the Fairfield defensive third, outshooting the Stags 9-2 to end the first half. But despite the shot advantage, the Stags still only trailed by a goal as Rosen added two more saves to her total. Boston College goalkeeper Sarah Dwyer earned one save in the second quarter on those two Fairfield attempts.
Boston College built on its lead with a goal in the third quarter as Margo Carlin scored off a breakaway that ended with her releasing a shot from the right corner in the 39
th minutes of the game. The Eagles tacked on seven more shots in the period with Rosen turning away five of those opportunities.
"Zoe kept us in the game with a phenomenal presence in the cage," Coach Kane said. "She made several key saves and we built on the momentum that she gave us by making those saves. She was truly amazing this afternoon."
The Stags used that momentum from the defensive effort to begin collecting opportunities for the offense. The first chance came just two minutes into the game when
Julianna Kratz deflected a ball sent toward goal by
Malen Iglesias at the 47:31 mark.
Less than two minutes later, Fairfield managed to tie the game when
Page Lowry converted a pass from Kratz from the right corner, beating the goalkeeper low to make the score 2-2 with just over 10 minutes left in regulation.
"Our freshmen really stepped into huge roles for us," Kane said. "I have been encouraged by their play and the way they have approached preseason which paid off for us especially today."
With the game tied after 60 minutes of play, the Stags were able to gain possession in the opening minutes of overtime. The Stags had the first opportunity to win the game when Lowry put a shot on goal that beat the goalkeeper forcing a back to use her stick to deflect the shot away from danger.
Fairfield earned a penalty corner second later which set up the deciding goal as
Luzi Persiehl received the ball and one-time a shot that caught the corner and sent the Stags to its win over the nationally-ranked Eagles.
"In fourth quarter, we saw our opportunity and pressed hard," Kane said. "We were relentless on defense and were quick to counter and create more chances. We capitalized on our opportunities and that was the difference for us."
Fairfield returns to action next weekend with a pair of home games, beginning on Friday when they host the University of Vermont at 4 pm. The Stags will host Saint Francis Pa. on Sunday, September 8 for a noon start to end the home weekend.
