STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – The Fairfield University Women's Soccer team was in control from start to finish as the Stags scored two goals in each period with
Gabby Diodati setting the table with a goal and an assist in Fairfield's 4-0 win over Wagner. Diodati was one of four different goal scorers in the victory.
"I'm really happy and proud for the way we responded," Head Coach
David Barrett said. "They were a different type of opponent than we had for the first two game, so we had to adjust to a different style. I think the key in the second half was
Jenn Wahlig in the midfield winning the 1 v 1 balls in the air. I'm happy we scored good goals and wore them down. I'm happy other people getting playing opportunities and we are looking forward to another challenge against Yale."
Diodati was a big reason that the Stags were able to control the pace of play through her role as right back. She was at the forefront of Fairfield's (2-1) first goal as the junior sent a beautiful cross from the right side into the box where
Brooke Jones was able to head in for her first collegiate score. That score came in the 38th minute, the eighth shot for the Stags up until that point.
It took just 68 seconds for the Stags to touch the back of the net again as
Julia McGuire sent a right footed strike from the top of the box to give Fairfield a 2-0 halftime lead.
The Stags kept control of the pace in the second half, taking seven of the nine shots in the period. Stryjek had one of those attempts and she managed to find the net for her first collegiate score.
Stryjek got the ball on a tapped pass from
Liz Dumas in the 65th minute and mad a nice stutter step move to get by her defender. With the open space, Stryjek sent a rocketed shot towards goal that snuck under the crossbar for the third Fairfield goal.
Diodati capped the four goal performance with her first goal of the year in the 74th minute. In nearly the same spot where she recorded an assist, the junior sent another left-footed ball to goal with this one sailing past the goalkeeper finding the back post.
Fairfield out-shot the Seahawks 19-9, with 12 of those on goal. On the other side,
Gena Pike stopped all four chances she faced.
The Stags will have another quick turnaround when they travel to New Haven, Conn., to face Yale on Sunday at 5pm.
