WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – The Fairfield University Women's Soccer team went toe-to-toe with the UConn Huskies over the first hour of game play, but surrendered two second half goals and dropped their first game of the season 3-0 to UConn.
Kess Elmore opened the scoring for UConn in the tenth minute after collecting a pass from Alana Moore and racing past the line to put the Huskies up 1-0. However, besides surrendering that early goal, the Stags' defense locked down UConn for the majority of the first half, limiting the Huskies to just three shots in the first 45 minutes.
The Stags equaled that amount during the opening half with two of those attempts coming off the head of
Brooke Jones. Her best chance came in the 38th minute when the rookie headed a shot that required a save from goalkeeper Randi Palacios and led to an ensuing corner kick. Thursday's hero
Stephanie Tsangaris also had a shot on goal, but was also stopped by the UConn keeper.
Fairfield kept the pressure up in the early part of the second half, registering the first three shots in the first 15 minutes. Freshman
Allie Landino nearly knotted up the score as she took two shots on goal, with one requiring a team save in the 61st minute.
Elmore was a part of the second UConn goal as she sent a pass to Melina Couzis to extend the Huskies lead to 2-0. UConn would add a penalty kick to account for the 3-0 score.
Fairfield attempted seven shots in the contest with Landino and Jones leading the squad with two.
The Stags will continue their season long four-game road trip with a visit to Wagner on Friday at 7pm.
