Softball Gains Split With Siena

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. -- The Fairfield University softball team picked up a split with Siena College in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) doubleheader, winning the first game by a 3-2 score before dropping a 1-0 eight-inning result in the second game.

The Saints put themselves in good shape early, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first inning when the first three Siena batters reached base. A single and a walk set up the inning which Lauren Sabihon made good use of with her two-run double with no outs in the inning. The home team added a third in the inning but Fairfield starter Lauryn Rhinehart was able to secure the final out to keep the game close.

Fairfield utilized its team speed to manufacture its first run of the game which came in the top of the third inning. Amanda Ulzheimer worked out a one-out walk to set the table for Mikayla Rubin, who garnered the RBI with her double to left field. Rhinehart would add a single in the inning but the Stags could not record any more runs which kept the score at 2-1.

The Stags would take the lead in the fifth inning as the top of the lineup put the team in a good position to win the game. Ulzheimer and Rubin both picked up a single to begin the rally and each moved up a base when Lacey Olaff executed a well-placed sacrifice bunt to put two runners in scoring position. Rhinehart brought home the team's second run when her ground ball was misplayed, tying the score at 2-2. Kaitlin Hoffman provided the deciding run with a single that pushed across the team's third run.

Rhinehart made the one-run lead stand up as she scattered seven hits and struck out four batters in her seven innings of work, resulting in the right hander picking up her sixth win of the season.

The second game saw another solid pitching performance by a member of the Fairfield pitching staff as Katie Kudlacik entered the pitching circle looking for her 10th win of the year. The freshman pitched brilliantly for the entire game, surrendering only two hits in the first seven innings of play. Unfortunately for the lefty, Fairfield offense could not push any runs across so the game remained tied at 0-0 after seven innings.

Siena scored the deciding run in the bottom of the eighth inning as Madysen Cossack stroked a one-out double to put a runner in scoring position immediately for the home team. She yielded to a pinch runner before Sabihon stroked a walk-off single that ended the game with one out in the inning. Kudlacik only surrendered four hits in the game but two of those hits came in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Fairfield will have a quick turnaround when it hosts Saint Peter's University at Alumni Softball Field on Saturday afternoon. The first game of the doubleheader is set for 12 pm.
