FAIRFIELD, Conn. – One of the best parts of watching a Fairfield University Baseball game is that you never know which student-athlete is going to shine when they take the field. Today, it was five Fairfield pitchers who combined to bring a one-hitter into the ninth inning in an eventual 7-0 shutout victory for the Stags over Sacred Heart, their 16th victory in their last 18 outings. The win also marked the 200th victory for Head Coach
Bill Currier in his Fairfield career.
"The wins during this stretch have been shared by different players," Coach Currier said after his milestone win. "Today,
Griffin Watson,
Tom Ryan, and a few other guys were important parts. It keeps everybody in the game when different guys are coming through. Our pitching has been keeping the runs down during the week which gives out hitters a chance to score some runs and that's why we're winning midweeks."
Fairfield's (21-14) seven-game winning streak is the longest since the Stags won nine-straight during the 2009 season.
Fairfield starter
Josh Arnold and reliever
Tristan Amone combined to bring a no-hitter into the seventh inning, which was snapped by Elijah Brown's line drive into centerfield to lead off the seventh.
Bobby McNiff and
Brendan Harkin did not allow a hit in their innings of work as the Stags carried a one-hitter into the final out of the ballgame until the Pioneers tallied back-to-back singles to account for their three base knocks.
Starting in his first game of the season, catcher
Nick Weyant opened the scoring in the second inning with his first career RBI as he grounded out in the second. It would be the first of two RBI for Weyant.
Tim Zeng would follow as he lined a RBI single on the first pitch of the at-bat.
Weyant would drive in another run in the third as his bases loaded walk forced in
Anthony Boselli to bring the score to 4-0.
The Stags broke the game open with a three-run sixth inning that was highlighted by a two-run single by
Griffin Watson.
Amone was credited with his first win of the season tossing 1.1 innings allowing just one hit and striking out one. Arnold came one out shy of picking up the win as he threw 4.2 hitless innings.
Watson and
Dan Ryan were the lone Stags to pick up multiple hits in the victory.
The Stags will look to keep their momentum going during Easter Weekend when they host Monmouth for a three-game series starting with a doubleheader on Friday at noon.
