FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- It was one of those days where whoever had the big inning went on to win the game. In the first game of today's doubleheader, the Stags posted a four-run frame that led them to a 6-4 win over
Canisius College. The second game swung the other way when the Golden
Griffs recorded six runs in one inning that sent the visitors to a 6-2 win over the Stags. When the day was done, both teams finished the day with 4-4 records in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (
MAAC) play.
The opener saw
Canisius put the first run on the scoreboard when the team used a pair of hits with two outs to scratch a 1-0 lead off starter
Karisa Hughen. Her teammates answered right back by erasing that deficit and taking the lead with a pair of runs in its half of the third inning. The Stags also strung together multiple hits with two outs but two of their hits were doubles and that enabled the team to grab a 2-1 edge. The rally was started with an infield hit from Amanda
Ulzheimer, who moved up to bases when
Alisha Marshall stroked a double down the left field line.
Mikayla Rubin cashed in on that opportunity by hitting the base of the left field fence to bring home both runners and give her teammates a 2-1 lead.
Canisius tied the game up in its next at-bat with a two-out single but once again the lead was short lived as Fairfield responded with its four-run inning that pushed the team in front for good at 6-2. The first run came home when Cynthia
Meringer's grounder was mishandled and allowed
Sam Merino to score the team's third run. Madison
Robicheau followed as the next batter and laced a base hit to left center field that chased home Maria
Telle and
Meringer to bring the score to 5-2. The team's final run crossed the plate after Rubin picked up her third RBI of the game with a base hit to bring the score to 6-2.
The
Griffs made the game more interesting when they added two more runs in the top of the seventh inning but pitcher Katie
Kudlacik finished off her third inning of work to secure the game for
Hughen. The freshman left hander registered both strikeouts for the Stags' pitching staff.
In the second game, Fairfield developed a run in the first and fourth innings to spot Fairfield starter
Lauryn Rhinehart a 2-0 lead. The first run was scored when
Ulzheimer opened the first inning with a base hit to second base. Marshal took her place on first base after hitting into a fielder's choice and took second base after Rubin sliced a single to put two runners on base. After
Rhinehart walked to put a runner on all three bases, Maria
Telle drew a walk to force in the game's first run. The Stags added one run to their total in the fourth inning after
Meringer tripled down the left field line that brought
Rhinehart home after she singled to start the inning.
Canisius broke the game open by scoring six runs before the Stags could record an out, a rally that was aided by six hits, an error, and a pair of wild pitches that both yielded a run. The Stags used three pitchers in the inning with
Kudlacik, the team's final hurler in the inning, retired the side to end the rally. Fairfield loaded the bases in the next inning with no outs, but pitcher Lauren Castro worked her way out of the situation without surrendering a run.
The Stags will return to the diamond on Sunday for another
MAAC doubleheader, hosting
Niagara University beginning at 11 am.
