Softball Swept By Niagara

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University softball team dropped a pair of games to Niagara University at Alumni Softball Field, falling 4-2 in the first game and 8-2 in the finale.

The Stags started the day by scoring a run in their first at-bat of game one when Alisha Marshall sliced a one-out single up the middle.  Mikayla Rubin followed Marshall in the lineup and brought her teammate home with a double to the left-center field gap that produced a 1-0 lead.

The Purple Eagles tied the game in the next inning after Kendall Watkins cleared the left-center field fence to bring the score 1-1. Niagara took control of the game in the fourth inning by plating three runs with two coming home off a double from Watkins, making it a 4-1 lead in favor of the visitors.

Fairfield tried to rally in its last at-bat and actually added a run to their game total but the comeback fell short and ended with a 4-2 loss. Amanda Ulzheimer, Marshall, and Rubin accounted for Fairfield's three hits in the game. Lauren Rhinehart started the game for Fairfield and lasted four innings before yielding to Lacey Olaff, who tossed the final three innings.

The second game spotted Niagara a three-run lead when the Purple Eagles scored a run in the third inning and two more in the fourth inning. Fairfield answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, combining three hits with the last coming in the form of Maria Telle's run-scoring single.Niagara broke the game open in the seventh inning, scoring five runs on five hits as Watkins changed the game by launching a grand slam that turned a one-run game into a 7-2 lead.

Olaff and Telle each picked up a pair of hits in the nightcap, while Marshall, Rhinehart, and Sam Merino each had a base hit in the Stags' seven-hit attack. Olaff also saw time in the pitching circle in game two, tossing three-plus innings and allowing just two hits and one run.

The Stags will play a non-conference game on Wednesday when they host Columbia University at Alumni Softball Field. The game is scheduled for a 4 pm start.
