JERSEY CITY, N.J. - This victory was basically a blueprint of what has been making the 2019 Fairfield University Baseball team so successful. Combine good starting pitching with an incredible bullpen and to give the offense time to pick up timely hits. All three of those factors were in play tonight as the Stags defeated Saint Peter's 7-2, marking their 12th victory over their last 14 games.
Austin Pope carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning for the Stags (17-14, 7-3 MAAC) and allowed just two unearned runs in his first victory of the year.
Eli Oliphant would follow with three perfect innings out of the bullpen, registering his second save of the season.
Oliphant lowered his ERA to 3.10 on the season in a team-high 11 appearances. His effort also lowered Fairfield's bullpen ERA to just 1.57 in 23 innings in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play.
"Pitching is what kept us in the game today," Head Coach
Bill Currier said. "We had guys get on base and had some timely hit but we stranded 14 today."
The Stags reached base 24 times tonight with 11 hits, 10 walks, and three hit by pitches. No Stag reached base more than leadoff hitter
Tim Zeng who was a catalyst at the top of the order, reaching base in all six plate appearances.
Zeng would be the first Stag to score after doubling for the second time in the game in the third inning.
Jack Gethings would bring him home with a two-out RBI double. The senior would score on a
Dan Ryan RBI double, one of a team-high three hits for Ryan. In MAAC play,
Dan Ryan is leading the Stags with a .364 average.
Tom Ryan extended the Stags lead with a two-run double in the fifth and
Mike Caruso would add a RBI single.
The Stags would add a pair of runs in the ninth with a Zeng bases loaded walk and a
Justin Guerrera sacrifice fly.
Seven different Stags tallied at least one hit with Zeng, Gethings, and
Dan Ryan all tallying multiple hits.
The Stags will look to win their fourth-straight series with a Saturday doubleheader starting at noon.
