Stags Close Out Southern Trip with Win Over James Madison

HARRISONBURG, Va. – The Fairfield University Baseball team scored the first nine runs of the game and cruised to a 9-2 final over James Madison in their final game before Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play. Seven different Stags added to the team's nine hits, with Justin Guerrera and Anthony Boselli leading the group with a pair.

"We did a good job at seizing our opportunities and not leaving runners in scoring position," Head Coach Bill Currier. "We only left five runners on in the game. Our pitching battled to get out of trouble despite their walks and allowed us time to get to their starter."

The bigger of Guerrera's two hits came in a scoreless game in the sixth as he tripled down the right field line, scoring Tim Zeng to put the Stags on the board first. Jack Gethings would add to the lead by driving home Guerrera with a sacrifice fly.

Boselli would have his second hit of the night as he doubled to left, plating two runs and extending Fairfield's lead to 5-0 in the eighth. Dylan Reynolds would follow Boselli's momentum as he also lined a two-run double in the frame as the Stags led 7-0 heading to the ninth.

As impressive as the offense was in the 9-2 victory, the Fairfield pitching staff kept a dangerous James Madison lineup off the board. Josh Arnold was the first of four Fairfield pitchers who did not allow a run in their outings. Arnold battled through the first four innings, always making the pitch to get out of jams. Arnold battled out of a bases loaded jam in the third by getting a pop up. In his final inning, Arnold allowed the only two hits of hit start but got a strikeout and an easy groundout to end the threat. Despite allowing six walks, Arnold did not allow a run and surrendered two hits and striking out four.

Peter Horn, who picked up the victory, threw a scoreless fifth before Ian Halpin came in for a perfect sixth. Eli Oliphant went the longest out of the bullpen, hurling two scoreless frames.

The Stags will now turn their attention to MAAC play when they travel to Iona for a three-game series starting Saturday at noon.
