FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University Women's Basketball Class of 2019 were honored before their final home game at Alumni Hall and displayed the same energy and passion that fans have been accustomed through their careers, but they could not find all the magic as they fell 60-53 to Rider on Senior Day. With the loss, the Stags will now open up the upcoming Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championships on Thursday at 9:30am as the ninth seed.
Â
The Stags looked like they could find that Senior Day magic when they built a 16-0 run in the second quarter to turn a 17-14 deficit into a 13-point lead, their largest of the night.
Casey Foley started the stretch with a free throw and
Sam Kramer tallied seven of the 16 points. Foley would add another 3-pointer and
Andrea Hernangomez would conclude the run with four-straight points. Fairfield would out-score the Broncs 20-6 in the first quarter.
Fairfield brought an eight point lead into the final quarter. However, Rider would quickly tie the game on an 8-0 run in the first two minutes of the fourth. Fairfield would respond by regaining the lead on two
Lou Lopez-Senechal free throws and would bring that advantage to five with two layups by
Sam Kramer.
Â
After Rider got within a point, Lopez-Senechal connected on a jumper with just under four minutes remaining to give Fairfield a 50-47 lead. She would be the only Stag to score for the rest of the game as her three free throws would tie the game with 1:08 remaining at 53-53.
Â
MAAC Player of the Year candidate Stella Johnson would take over in the final minute with a 3-pointer to give the Broncs the lead on their next possession and a steal to cap the game late.
Â
The Stags would have two opportunities to tie the game with 40 seconds left, but both shots were off the mark.
Â
Lopez-Senechal led the Stags with her third career 20-point game and also paced the team with seven boards.
Â
In her final home game,
Casey Foley dished out a team-high five assists and swiped three steals, bringing her career total to 177. She also netted nine points and grabbed six boards. She would also hit two 3-pointers to bring her career mark to 128, the ninth most is program history.
Â
Kramer would be the only other Stag in double figures as she finished with 11 points on 5-for-8 shooting.
Â
The Stags will now await their opponent for the First Round contest of the MAAC Championships on Thursday morning.
