Stags Fire on All Cylinders in Win Over Siena

LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. – When looking at the turning point of the game, most fans will look towards the end of the contest. This one came down to five minutes in the second quarter where the Stags played arguably their best basketball of the season. The Fairfield University Women's Basketball team scored 20-straight points to turn a 21-12 deficit into a 32-21 lead, an advantage they would not relinquish in building their longest winning streak of the season, defeating Siena 66-40.

"We needed a jolt," said Head Coach Joe Frager, who won his 399th career game tonight. "We kind of weren't really there. They handled it the right way. They could have sulked about it but they didn't. They went out and banded together and played really well."

The victory, which was the third-straight for the Stags and the fifth in their last seven games came down to that five minute stretch where they can do no wrong. Katie Armstrong started the run at the 7:00 minute mark, the first of eight Fairfield field goals over the next five minutes. Fairfield hit four 3-pointers during that stretch with two coming from Lou Lopez-Senechal. The Stags would grab a 32-23 halftime lead after trailing 21-12.

While the offense is obviously the focal point of that run, the defense of the Stags held Siena to just one field goal for the first nine minutes of the quarter. The Saints actually hit just two field goals in 13 minutes spanning back to the first period.

The Stags hit 11 3-pointers in the contest, with six coming from Sam Kramer, one shy of her career-high and the single game program record. The final of her long range shots gave the Stags their largest lead at the time at 17 to give the road squad a 47-30 advantage. That trifecta was also the 100th of her career, becoming the 14th Stag to reach that mark.

Casey Foley also helped out on both sides of the ball with a team-high eight assists and eight points. Foley connected on her 115th 3-pointer in the second quarter to bring her into the top-10 in program history. Foley also netted five-straight points to open the fourth quarter, extending the Fairfield advantage.

All those scorers were chasing Lopez-Senechal who finished with a team-high 21 points, tying her career-high. The reigning MAAC Rookie of the Week swished through three 3-pointers and went 9-for-15 from the field. Her last 3-pointer was in the middle of a 14-0 run to end of the contest as the Stags ended the game to win by 26.

The Stags scored 24 points off of turnovers, over their average of 20.5 over the last six games. Foley and Lopez-Senechal were at the forefront of that cause with three steals apiece. Lopez-Senechal also led the game with a career-high nine rebounds.

Fairfield will put their three-game winning streak to the test when they host league-leading Quinnipiac on Sunday at 2pm.
