FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University Women's Basketball team will look to build off their best offensive game of the season when they host the Hofstra Pride on Saturday at 2pm at the George Bisacca Court at Alumni Hall. The Women's Basketball program will also be hosting their annual Alzheimer's Awareness Night with all fans encouraged to wear purple. Along with donations collected at the game, Head Coach
Joe Frager will be pledging $20 for every 3-pointer the Stags hit on Saturday.
The Stags are coming off their best offensive game of the season, netting a season-high 66 points in a 66-52 win over Navy. Fairfield also had their best shooting night of the young campaign with season bests in field goal percentage (.464) and 3-point percentage (.438).
The Stags shot their best in the first half, out-scoring Navy 39-25 which included a 23-11 clip in the second quarter.
Lou Lopez-Senechal, who would lead the Stags with 17 points, had 15 of those in the first half as she shot 6-for-8 from the floor and 3-for-4 from behind the arc in the first 20 minutes.
Lopez-Senechal was one of three Stags in double figures with
Callie Cavanaugh (15) and
Rachel Hakes (11) following suit. Hakes had another accurate day shooting the ball as the sophomore went 4-for-5 from the floor and hit both of her 3-point attempts. For the season, Hakes is shooting nearly 60 percent from the floor and 80 percent from behind the arc.
Sam Kramer neared double figures as she finished with nine, which featured another 4-point play conversion. Kramer has converted two 4-point plays this season and three in her career. She is the only active Stag to have at least one in their career. Kramer's 3-pointer was the 113th of her career as she ties Meka Werts for 12th on the program's all-time list.
The win over Navy also marked the first time this season that the Stags were not out-rebounded by their opponent with each side finishing with 33 boards. Fairfield won the rebounding battle in the first half, 20-14 helping them to that 14-point halftime lead.
The Stags also limited their turnovers in the victory as they committed only 13 miscues. Navy had entered the game forcing an average of 20.5 turnovers from their opponents, which featured a season-high 31 in a road win at Clemson. Fairfield has done a good job this season at securing the ball as their 83 total turnovers is the 19th fewest in the country.
Hofstra enters the game after defeating Morgan State 51-39, snapping a five-game losing streak. The Pride are also coming off their best shooting game of the season with a .434 shooting percentage while making 23 field goals. Although offense has been a struggle for the Pride, they are averaging 53.6 points over their last three games, compared to a 44.0 scoring clip over their first four.
Sorelle Ineza is the team's leading scorer with 8.9 points per game. She is followed closely by Ana Hernandez Gil (8.6) and Marianne Kalin (8.4).
This is the seventh Division I meeting between the two schools with Hofstra holding a 5-1 advantage. The Stags will be looking for their first victory in the series since 1982, their first season in Division I. In fact, that victory marked the sixth Division I win for the Stags at Alumni Hall.
Fairfield will have nearly two weeks off as they take their final exams, next stepping on to the court on Friday, Dec. 20 at St. John's at 7pm.
