Men's Basketball Travels To Wagner For Saturday Matinee

FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- The Fairfield University men's basketball returns to the hardwood on Saturday for its final non-conference game of the 2019-20 campaign, traveling to Wagner College for a Saturday afternoon game. The Stags are slated for a 4 pm tip with the Seahawks.

The Stags overcame a 13-point deficit with just over five minutes remaining in the second half to defeat Oakland University by a 61-59 score in overtime. Fairfield scored the last 13 points of the game to tie the score at 51-51 after regulation. Jesus Cruz scored the first nine points during the run which propelled him to a game-high 23 points. After Oakland scored the first two points in extra time, the Stags netted the next seven points and never trailed again. Fairfield made one of its first nine shots and two of its first 16 attempts in the second half before finishing with six field goals in its final 14 second-half shots.

Landon Taliaferro, who missed the Oakland game, leads the team in scoring with his 15.8 scoring average. Cruz ranks second among his teammates with 15.5 points per game while Taj Benning just misses double digits with 9.1 points every forty minutes. Kevin Senghore-Peterson secured a team-best nine rebounds against Oakland, eclipsing his career high in that category by one carom. He raised his season rebounding mark to 3.5 per game, completing the team's top rebounding foursome with Vincent Eze (5.1 rpg), Jesus Cruz (4.9 rpg), and Taj Benning (4.8 rpg). 

The Seahawks picked up an 82-62 win over Army West Point in their last game, improving their overall record to 3-7 overall. Wagner placed three student-athletes in double figures, led by Alex Morales' 21 points. Curtis Cobb was next in line with 18 points, followed by Chase Freeman's 14 points. The Seahawks outscored their opposition by 17 points in the final 20 minutes, turning a three-point edge into a 20-point victory. Wagner netted 11 three pointers against the Black Knights, the third time this season that the team posted 10 or more long-range jumpers.

The team also reached double figures with 15 against Stony Brook and a season-best 18 three pointers in the Wesley win. Cobb is central to the team's three-point success, posting 27 in his eight appearances. He netted 10 three pointers in the win against Wesley on his way to a game-high 40 points. He is the team's top scorer with 17.4 points per game. Alex Morales, the only Seahawk to start all 10 games this season, is also scoring in double figures with his 14.2 scoring average. Tyrone Nesby IV represents one of the team's top three-point threats with 19 long-range jumpers, accounting for 57 of the his 83 points scored through 10 games.

Following this game, Fairfield will begin Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play with its annual trip to upstate New York. The Stags will start the weekend with a match up against Niagara on Friday, January 3 followed by a Sunday afternoon contest with Canisius on January 5.
