Men's Basketball Takes On Davidson Friday Night

KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- The Fairfield University men's basketball team will play its second game in the 2019 Orlando Invitational, taking on Davidson College on Friday night. The game will be broadcasted on ESPNNews beginning at 7 pm. The games are being played at the HP Fieldhouse in Disney's Wide World of Sports complex.Following this game, Fairfield will play one more game on Sunday with the opponent and game time to be determined. 

The Stags dropped a 54-47 decision against the University of Southern California in their Orlando Invitational opener. Fairfield led for most of the first half, courtesy of five three-point field goals, before seeing the lead disappear with two minutes left in the period. USC turned its three-point half time lead into a double-digit advantage after opening the second half with an 8-0 run that pushed the score to 33-22 just two minutes into the second half. Fairfield came as close as six points in after that run but could not challenge any further. Jesus Cruz remains the team's top scorer with a 17.3 scoring average, followed by senior Landon Taliaferro's 14.7 points per game. Taliaferro netted four three pointers against USC, giving the guard nine three pointers in the last two games. The guard is shooting 56 percent from long-range during the two-game stretch (9 of 16) which raised his season three-point field goal percentage to 42.2 percent (19 of 45). 

The Wildcats opened up play in the Orlando Invitational with a matchup against Marquette on Thursday night. Davidson saw a late lead fade against Marquette, falling by a 73-63 decision. The Wildcats held a 26-20 lead late in the opening half but saw that edge fall to one point at 26-25 by halftime. Marquette pulled away late in the second half by using a 20-7 run in the second half that allowed the team to take control of the game. Davidson has three players in double figures for the season, beginning with Kellen Grady who paces the team with his 18.7 points every forty minutes. He is joined in the double-digit club by Jon Axel Gudmundson and Carter Collins, who average 12.0 and 10.2 points respectively.  Gudmundson also represents the team's leading rebounder, collecting 5.2 rebounds per outing. Luke Frampton serves as the team's top long-range shooting threat, netting 14 of 29 three-point field goal attempts for 48.3 percent.
