HAMDEN, Conn. -- Head Coach
Carl Rees watched his team put its best effort forward this afternoon against Quinnipiac University, but the effort came up short as the Stags fell to the Bobcats by a 1-0 score. The decision prevented Fairfield from its third straight win after winning back-to-back matches at home last week.
Throughout the first half, the Stags were able to find open space and penetrate Quinnipiac's offensive third, but could not find a way to the ball into the back of the net. The team created many chances in the first half, finishing the first 45 minutes with eight shots which doubled up the Bobcats effort. The first chance came off a corner kick in the seventh minute when Marcus
Nordgard was able to put some force behind the cross but was turned away by a save from Jared
Mazzola. It would not be the only time that the Bobcats keeper would disappoint Fairfield fans with his play.
Later in the half, Don-Junior
Bobe was open when a long cross found its way into the box, allowing
Bobe to rise above his defender and hit a header that sailed just wide of the far post in the
13th minute. While the opportunities may not have been as plentiful, Quinnipiac took advantage of one of those four chances in the
37th minute.
RomainÂ
Daniellou took control of the ball about 25 yards from goal, sidestepped a defender, and sent a ball into the box.
Eamon Whelan stepped into the path of the cross and flicked the ball with a header that
nicked the inside of the far post and caromed into the back of the net to put the home team in front.
The second half saw limited scoring chances for the Stags with
Bobe and
KheireddineÂ
Kourdassi each taking a shot from a distance but both attempts sailed wide of the mark. Fairfield did not have a shot on target until the
80th minute as Marcus
Nordgard found his way into an opportunity but his shot was turned away by
Mazzola. That shot would be the only one on target in the second half by Fairfield despite taking five in the final 45 minutes.Â
The Fairfield University men's soccer team will play its final regular-season game by traveling to Niagara University next Wednesday for an afternoon contest. Game time is slated for 4 pm.
