Men's Basketball Finishes Two-Game Swing At #6 Maryland Tuesday

FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- The Fairfield University men's basketball team will close out a two-game run through the state of Maryland on Tuesday night when the Stags play seventh-ranked University of Maryland. The game is scheduled to tip at 8:30 pm and is set to be broadcasted on the Big Ten Network.

Tuesday night's meeting will be the second between these two programs. The first meeting came during the 2009-10 season in College Park. The Stags had only one student-athlete who scored in double figures, namely guard Derek Needham. The guard netted 15 points with half of those points coming from the free throw line (8 for 8). Maryland received 14 points from Eric Hayes and another 13 points from Sean Mosley as nine Terrapins scored in the game.

The Stags played their second straight overtime game on Sunday night, falling to Loyola Maryland by an 84-75 score. The Stags rallied to tie the game by scoring the final five points of regulation to send the contest into extra time. Loyola Maryland scored 11 of its 16 overtime points from the free throw line to take control of the contest. Four of Fairfield's starting five reached double figures, namely Jesus Cruz (17 points), Landon Taliaferro (17), Vincent Eze (15), and Taj Benning (14).

Those scoring totals led Fairfield to a season-high 75 points, breaking the 70-point mark for the first time this season. Cruz saw his season scoring average dip to under 20 points to 19.5 points per game which still represents a team-high. Landon Taliaferro is next in line with his 14.3 scoring average. Benning, who averages 11.5 points every forty minutes, represents the team's top rebounder at 6.8 caroms per contest.

Maryland rolls into tonight's game with a 3-0 record after handing an 80-50 loss to Oakland University over the weekend. Oakland enjoyed a quick start that sent the team to a 16-12 lead early and trailed by just two points, 24-22, before Maryland ended the first half with 11 straight points to take control by intermission. The Terps have not been outscored in a half this season, holding a double-digit advantage in five of those six halves this season.

Jalen Smith, who has two double-doubles in three games, is averaging nearly a double double for the season with 14.3 points and 9.7 rebounds per game. Anthony Cowan (12.3 ppg), Darryl Morsell (11.0 ppg), Aaron Wiggns (10.7 ppg), and Eric Ayala (10.3 ppg) are score in double figures for the season. Wiggins is also performing well defensively with three steals per game, placing second in the Big Ten. Cowan ranks sixth in the conference with 9.7 rebounds every forty minutes.

Fairfield begins a run of games as part of the Orlando Invitational with the Maryland game. The team will play three more games in Orlando against the University of Southern California in its first game followed by a matchup with either Marquette or Davidson on day two of the tournament.
