FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Matt Turner, former Fairfield University soccer goalkeeper, earned an invitation to the United States National Team pre-camp, one of 20 players to receive the call up from Coach Gregg Berhalter. The camp runs from November 2-9 in Bradenton, Fla.
"Something that everybody dreams about is putting on the crest and colors of their nation," Turner said. "Representing the United States would be a dream come true for me."
The spot in this month's precamp marks the first international call up for Turner, gaining attention after turning in a stellar season in 2019. Turner completed his fourth year in the professional ranks ranked fourth among MLS goalkeepers in save percentage (.748), fifth in winning percentage (.639), and second in saves per 90 minutes (4.54). He finished fifth in the Allstate MLS Goalkeeper of the Year voting. His overall record with the Revolution stands at 16-14-16 with 170 saves and 10 shutouts since signing as an undrafted college player before the 2016 season.
Before signing with the Revolution, Turner excelled as the starting goalkeeper for the Stags, starting 37 of the team's 38 games played during his junior and senior seasons. As a senior, Turner posted a .793 save percentage with a 0.98 goals against average, collecting seven shutouts. He earned a spot on the All-Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) second team in 2015.
The goalkeeper led the nation in save percentage as a junior, stopping 89 percent of the shots he faced in 2014 and helped the Stags lead the nation in shutout percentage by not allowing a goal in 72 percent of the games in which he played. He ended the year with a 0.50 goals against average after earning two MAAC defensive player of the week awards and a spot on the MAAC All-Tournament team.
While at Fairfield, Turner was a member of the Jersey Express of the Premier Development League (PDL) for two seasons.
