FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Fairfield University Women's Tennis opened the MAAC slate on Saturday with a 7-0 sweep of visiting Rider. The defending conference champion Stags did not drop a set in singles action en route to victory on the WAC Outdoor Courts.
The Stags started the day by clinching the doubles point as
Laina Campos and 2019 MAAC Player and Rookie of the Year
Amanda Nowak took a 6-1 victory in the No. 2 slot. The short-handed Broncs did not field a No. 3 doubles squad, giving a default win to
Sophia Prinos and
Francesca Karman to lock up a 1-0 lead for the Stags.
In singles, it was Nowak,
Diana Prinos,
Aina March,
Anna Komer and
Sophia Prinos all looking up straight-set wins, with
Jessica Pil collecting the default at No. 6 to complete the sweep.
"It's nice to get the dual match season started with a win, and even more so since it's a MAAC match," said reigning MAAC Coach of the Year
Jeff Bricker. "I thought we played well and took care of business. We're looking forward to getting back on the practice courts to get ready for next weekend!"
The Stags continue the fall dual season next Saturday with a noon visit to Hofstra.
