Stags Move to 3-0 in MAAC After Win Over Canisius

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Freshman Brooke Jones tallied the eventual game-winning goal in the 25th minute, and the Fairfield University Women's Soccer team posted their second-straight clean sheet in a 1-0 road victory at Canisius. With the win, the Stags move to 3-0 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC), for the first time in five years.

"I thought we did enough to get the road win," Head Coach David Barrett said. "I'm proud of our ability to focus and attend to the details of the game. We left a couple of goals out there today, and their tactics slowed the game down but we adjusted and are happy to be 3-0 in the MAAC."

The Stags (6-3-2, 3-0 MAAC) would out-shoot Canisius (6-5-0, 1-3 MAAC) 17-6 including an 8-2 margin for shots on target.

Jones was the Stag to push the offensive tempo early, firing a shot on net just 90 seconds into the match. Canisius' goalkeeper Alana Rossie was able to scoop up the shot, the first of her seven saves on the afternoon.

The Stags would have five more shots and two more corner kicks before finding the back of the net in the 25th minute. Gabby Diodati would set up Jones' score, which would be the third goal of the season for Jones. Diodati was credited with her sixth assist of the season, tying her career-high and placing her first in the conference.

For the second-straight game, the Fairfield back line of Diodati, Olivia Homan, Josie Horosky, and Kelsey Gilbert dictated the defensive pressure and kept the ball in Fairfield's possession. The defensive line surrendered just six shots in the contest, and 10 over their last 180 minutes.

Canisius was held without a shot for 54 minutes of game time starting with Margretta Dry's attempt in the 27th minute and ending with Lexi Perry's shot that was stopped by Gena Pike.

Pike needed two saves in posting Fairfield's fifth shutout of the season, placing them in a tie for the MAAC lead.

This is the first time the Stags have started 3-0 in the MAAC since 2014.

The Stags will look to keep the momentum going when they return to Lessing Field for a season-long three-game homestand, starting with a meeting against in-state rival Quinnipiac on Wednesday night at 7pm.
