POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. -- The Fairfield University men's soccer team rallied to tie the score in the second half but ended up yielding a goal in overtime against Marist College, sending the Stags to a 2-1 setback on the road. For Fairfield, the overtime match was the team's seventh in 11 dates and the fourth time in four Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (
MAAC) games this season.
The Red Foxes were first to put a goal on the scoreboard when the team put together a run in the
22nd minute of the first half. Stefan
Copetti made a run down the side of the pitch and sent a cross into the box which found Allen
Gavilanes in open space. He collected the ball and sent a shot toward the goal that beat goalkeeper Gordon
Botterill to place the home team in front by a 1-0 margin.Â
Both teams has ample opportunities in the first half as Marist and Fairfield each put five shots toward goal. The goalkeepers were forced to make one save each with Marist keeper Sam
Ilin turning away an attempt from Don-Junior
Bobe in the
24th minute and Stags keeper Gordon
Botterill making a stop against
Gavilanes in the
38th minute. Despite the offensive chances, the score remained 1-0 in favor of the Red Foxes at the half.
Fairfield showed some promise at the start of the second half by providing some excitement inside the box. Fernando
Robayo provided the first opportunity when he found an opening and took and shot that sailed wide of the goal. Three minutes later, Matt
McGlinchey released a shot that was on frame but
Ilin was able to make the save. While
Fairfield took a few more shots later in the half, it wasn't until
Diallo Simon-Ponte made his run that the game turned. Daniel
Raimondo found Simon-Ponte and sent a pass his way, which Simon-Ponte controlled and placed into the back of the net, tying the game at 1-1 in the
70th minute.
The game remained knotted at 1-1 through the remainder of regulation as each team was only able to create one more shot the rest of the way, both of which were wide of the goal. Marist ended the game seven minutes into the first overtime when a quick cross from the right box by
Copetti found
Antek Sienkiel making a run toward the far post. The cross was redirected by
Sienkeil's header that caught the far corner of the goal and provided the winning margin for the Red Foxes.
