FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- A road test awaits the Fairfield University men's soccer team this Wednesday as the Stags will travel to Poughkeepsie, N.Y. for a meeting with Marist College. The date will complete a two-week run without a home game, a stretch which ends this Saturday when Fairfield hosts Monmouth University at Lessing Field. The Stags have held their own in road games this year, posting a 2-2-2 mark through six games.
The Stags come off a 0-0 draw at Iona College last weekend, the team's fourth shutout of the season and second scoreless draw this season. Three of those four clean sheets have come over the last three games, defeating Army by a 1-0 count, followed by the draws against Rider and Iona. Fairfield's only blemish during that run came at home against Saint Peter's as the team fell by a 4-3 score at Lessing Field. On the other side of the pitch, Marist is scoring goals regularly over the last four outings, finding the back of the net eight times which has led the team to a 2-2-0 record over the stretch.
Fairfield tallied a season-high with its three goals against Saint Peter's which gives the team four goals in its last four games. Forward Cooper
Knecht has become the team's top offensive threat as of late, accounting for three of the team's four scores over the last two weeks. He posted the game-winning goal against Army before posting two more goals in the Saint Peter's setback. The sophomore entered the season with one career point which came as an assist in the team's 2-1 win against Army West Point.
Cormac Pike tallied the other goal against Saint Peter's which was his first of the season and the third of the sophomore's career.
Marist, which enters the game with a 4-6-0 overall record and a 1-2
MAAC mark, has spread its recent offensive bounty around between five student-athletes. At the top of the team's scoring list stands
Huib Achterkamp who has three goals in the last four games and is tied for the top spot in total points with six. Christian
Curti has a pair of goals during the team's recent surge and has five total points on the season. Stefan
Copetti, Allen
Gavlianes, and
Samad Bounthong also scored a goal over the last two weeks.
Gavilanes has been the team's top play maker, accounting for four of the team's 10 assists to date.
The goalkeepers have played well all season long with both showing impressive stats through 10 games. Fairfield's Gordon
Botterill owns a 1.28 goals against average with ranks third in the
MAAC behind Iona's two goalkeepers who split time in the Gaels' goal.
Botterill averages 5.5 saves per game, highlighted by his 15-save outing against Rhode Island in the season opener. Samuel
Ilin has collected 38 saves in his 10 appearances as the Red Foxes' goalkeeper. He sports a 1.54 goals against average in more than 900 minutes of defending the Marist line.
Following Wednesday night's match, Fairfield will return home for a Saturday date against Monmouth University at Lessing Field. The game is listed for a 7 pm start.
