FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- After playing three consecutive home games, the Fairfield University men's basketball team plays a bit of role reversal when it will serve as the visiting team over the next three games. The Stags start the stretch by traveling to Manhattan College on Thursday night. The two team will square off at Draddy Gymnasium beginning at 7 pm.
Fairfield ended its season-long home stand with an 80-68 win over Iona College. The Stags never trailed in the game, scoring the game's first 10 points which would eventually turn into a season-best 23 point lead at 40-17 midway through the first half. The team held a 17-point halftime edge at 42-25 and never saw the advantage fall below nine points the rest of the way.
Jesus Cruz paced the Fairfield offense with 24 points, netting nine of 17 shots from the floor including a personal-best three three-point field goals. He was one of five Stags to reach double figures, joining
Landon Taliaferro (19 points),
Neftali Alvarez (11),
Jonathan Kasibabu (10), and reserve
Wassef Methnani (11). Fairfield forced 20 Iona turnovers, the most by the visitors since their 23 at VCU, which the Stags turned into 23 points.
Taliaferro took over sole possession of the team lead for scoring with his performance, raising his scoring average to 12.3 points per game.
Neftali Alvarez, who entered the game as the co-leader, places second with 12 points every forty minutes. Kasibabu saw his team-best rebounding average fall to 8.0, down slightly from the 8.2 mark with which he started the game. Alvarez paced the rebounding with a game-best seven caroms.
Fairfield entered this game ranked 61st in three pointers made (186) and ranked 76th in three pointers made per game (8.9) among Division I schools.
Landon Taliaferro places 35th in the nation with his .428 three-point field goal percentage, is tied for 41st in total three-point field goals made (62), and ranks 54th in three pointers per game (2.95).
The Jaspers will look to improve on their 4-16 overall record and 2-6 MAAC mark after falling to Siena by a 53-40 count. The Saints scored most of its points in the paint, netting 30 of their 53 points inside the lane. Tyler Reynolds paced the Jaspers' offense with 12 points. No Manhattan player has scored more than 12 points in the last three games, last happening when Warren Williams posted 15 points in 17 minutes of work in a 58-56 road win against Saint Peter's.
Williams is averaging 8.1 points per game, followed by Thomas Capuano's and Reynolds' 6.4 scoring average. Nehemiah Mack represents the team's play maker, dishing off a team-high 54 assists (2.7 per game) and registering 27 steals (1.4 per game). Ebube Ebube represents the team's top rebounder with 4.5 caroms per contest.
