HAMILTON, N.Y. – The Fairfield University Women's Soccer team surrendered a goal in the first minute of their road match and that score ended up deciding the contest as the Stags fell 1-0 to Colgate to conclude their non-conference slate.
The Stags (5-3-1) surrendered the game's deciding goal 50 seconds into the match as Colgate's (4-2-2) Leah Lewis corralled her own rebound and finished in the top corner to put the home team up 1-0.
That would be the only score of the game, but the Stags' offensive pressure kept producing opportunities. Fairfield out-shot Colgate 18-15 in the match including a 9-7 margin with shots on goal.
Holly Habyan had the first shot on target for the Stags in the 12th minute, which concluded a Colgate stretch of five shots in the opening 10 minutes of play. Habyan would lead the squad with three shots on net, but all were saved by Colgate's goalkeeping duo of Kelly Chiavaro and Sophia Boggs.
The Stags had a couple more opportunities 10 minutes later but
Liz Dumas' and
Gabby Diodati's shots were both saved by Chiavaro.
Fairfield looked for the equalizer in the final 45 minutes, putting five shots on net but all were stopped by Boggs, who entered the match at halftime.
Julia Kleczkowski had the first attempt on net in the second half just a minute into the period.
In the final minutes, Habyan was the offensive figure for the Stags taking the final two shots for Fairfield, both requiring a save from Boggs.
Dumas led the Stags with five of their 18 shots.
Aytana Muschajew also kept the Stags within striking distance as the freshman goalkeeper made six saves in net.
