Andy Copelan to Be Inducted into US Lacrosse Greater Rochester Chapter Hall of Fame

Copelan has completed 10 seasons as head coach of the Stags

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Fairfield University Men's Lacrosse Head Coach Andy Copelan will be inducted into the US Lacrosse Greater Rochester Chapter Hall of Fame. Copelan is a part of the seven-member class to be honored on November 2 in Pittsford, N.Y.

"I am humbled to receive this recognition from US Lacrosse and the Greater Rochester chapter," said Copelan. "It is truly a shared honor with my family, friends, fellow coaches, former teammates, and all of the student-athletes past and present that have been with me throughout my playing and coaching career."

Copelan, a native of Pittsford, N.Y., completed his 10th season with the Stags in 2018, a tenure that includes seven winning seasons and three conference regular season championships. Fairfield has entered the USILA national rankings in seven of Copelan's 10 years on the sidelines and defeated a nationally-ranked foe in eight of his 10 campaigns with the Stags. He was selected by his peers as the CAA Coach of the Year in 2015.

Copelan has seen his student-athletes excel in the classroom as well. During his stay at the helm, every student-athlete that has completed his eligibility has also earned a degree from Fairfield. The Stags have won the CAA Team Excellence Award in each of the last two seasons, recognizing their academic performance as the CAA team with the highest GPA.

Fairfield is the second head coaching stop on Copelan's resume, who was the youngest head coach in the nation when he was hired to lead Marist College in 2004. In his first season with the Red Foxes, he was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Coach of the Year following a MAAC Regular Season Championship and the program's first winning season in six years. In 2005, he led Marist to its first-ever NCAA postseason berth.

After his stint at Marist, Copelan held an assistant coaching position at the University of Maryland from 2006-08, rising to the offensive coordinator position for his last campaign with the Terps. Maryland reached the NCAA Tournament in each of Copelan's three seasons, highlighted by a trip to the 2006 Final Four.

As a student-athlete, Copelan was a four-year varsity letterwinner at Bucknell University. He earned All-Patriot League accolades for his performance on the field in 2003 and was named to the league's Academic Honor Roll in each of his seasons with the Bison.

Copelan played scholastically at Mendon High School, where he was an All-American on the lacrosse field and a First Team All-County quarterback on the gridiron. He was inducted into the Pittsford Athletics Hall of Fame in 2013.

The Greater Rochester Chapter Hall of Fame has inducted individuals based on outstanding lacrosse achievement and/or contribution since 1992. The mission of the Lacrosse Hall of Fame is to honor men and women, past and present, who by their deeds as players, coaches, officials and/or contributors, and by the example of their lives, personify the great contribution of the sport of lacrosse to our way of life.
