FAIRFIELD, Conn. – With a record-setting career on his resume,
Tyler Nelson is now ready for the next step in his basketball career. Nelson, who set Fairfield University's all-time scoring record with 2,172 points during the 2017-18 season, has been invited to work out with several NBA teams this week.
The guard will be part of a workout with the Los Angeles Lakers today and also earned a similar invitation from the Boston Celtics later this week. Nelson caps his week with a June 10 workout with the Charlotte Hornets. And, Nelson has already participated in a joint pro day that was hosted by the Golden State Warriors, the Philadelphia 76ers, and the Sacramento Kings. Based upon his performance in these events, Nelson could earn an invitation to an NBA camp.
Nelson enjoyed one of the best offensive seasons in school history, becoming the first Stag to score more than 700 points in a season (732). He showed his shooting range by establishing the program's record for three-point shooting with his 315 career three-point field goals, a number which he reached after becoming the first Fairfield men's basketball player hit the century mark in a season with 104 three pointers made. He was the top scorer in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC), scoring 22.2 points per game this past year.
Nelson earned a spot in the Portsmouth Invitational Tournament where he was named All-Tournament, and also received a berth to the Senior All-Star Game in San Antonio in early March. His list of honors from the 2017-18 season also includes All-MAAC first team, NABC All-District first team, All-Met Writers, and All-ECAC honors following his senior season.
"We've had remarkable players here at Fairfield and none more accomplished than Tyler," Fairfield University Men's Basketball Coach
Sydney Johnson said. "He flourished in our system, played a lot and was as clutch and smart as any player I've coached. As a program, we are highly confident that Tyler is ready for the next level."
