Box Score 2 RIVERDALE, N.Y. -- It would be hard to imagine having a better day than
Angelina McGuire had this afternoon. The Fairfield University softball team needed a strong effort against Manhattan College today in order to even up its Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) record. What the Stags needed, McGuire provided on this Saturday afternoon as the senior hit three home runs in a doubleheader sweep of the Jaspers, hitting two homers in the first game.
Fairfield has now won three straight games including today's sweep, sending the Stags into Sunday's doubleheader at Saint Peter's with a 2-2 mark in MAAC play. The team picked up 17 hits during the doubleheader including 11 base hits in the opener. More than half of the team's hits came off the bats of McGuire and
Courtney Hankins, who collected five hits and four hits over the two games, respectively. McGuire also was responsible for six RBI while Hankins batted in three more runs against the Jaspers.
McGuire provided Fairfield with the fast start, stroking a two-run homer in the top of the first inning which also scored Courntey Hankins who singled just before McGuire's at-bat. Manhattan added its own long ball in its half of the first with Adriana Gambino hitting a solo shot off starter
Destinee Pallotto. The Stags got that run back in their next at-bat as
Hannah Futo pushed a single up the middle and
Rachel Sieber laced a double to the left-center gap. In the top of the third inning, Hankins and McGuire combined for two more runs much in the same fashion as the first inning - Hankins registered a single and McGuire followed with a two-run homer.
While the Stags offense clicked, Pallotto retired six straight batters to keep Fairfield's lead at 5-1 after three innings. Manhattan finally solved Pallotto in the fourth frame when Briana Matazinsky launched a two-run homer in the bottom of the fourth inning which made the game more competitive at 5-3. Fairfield would regain its four-run lead with a single run in the fifth and another run in the sixth that brought the score to 7-3.
Kate Robinson's grounder brought home the Stags' sixth run while
Amanda Ulzheimer's double chased home
Mikayla Rubin, who tripled during her plate appearance.
Pallotto earned the win in the pitching circle by allowing just five hits and only one earned run which resulted in the eighth win of the season for the right-handed senior. She also struck out six hitters in her seven innings of work.
Game two also provided Fairfield with another quick beginning with
Drew Westford putting the visiting team in front with her ground-double that brought Ulzheimer home with the game's first run. In the second inning, Hankins made Manhattan pay for its inability to find the strike zone as the junior ripped a three-run homer that plated Sieber and Rubin, both of whom walked earlier in the inning. After a pitching change, McGuire garnered another home run that brought the score to 5-0 in favor of Fairfield.
McGuire played a role in the team's sixth run of the game, sending a double to right field that scored
Alisha Marshall. Marshall was on the base paths as a pinch runner, taking over for Rubin who was hit by a pitch. Fairfield's final run came in the fifth inning after the team strung together a walk and two hits. Futo started the rally by earning a walk while Marshall sent her to second with a base hit.
Sam Merino finished the opportunity with a single that brought the score to 7-0.
Manhattan broke through with a single run in the sixth and seven innings, both runs scoring off a sacrifice fly. Fairfield pitcher
Lauryn Rhinehart collected the win by tossing seven innings, yielding two earned runs off five hits.
