Box Score FAIRFIELD, Conn. --
Karisa Hughen displayed her best this afternoon which was good news for the Fairfield University softball. The junior right-hander tossed her first complete game of the season by scattering nine hits and striking out four Pioneer hitters in the Stags' 7-4 win over Sacred Heart University.
Fairfield took control of the game right from the start by scoring four runs in its half of the first inning, putting together three hits against 11-game winner Kristen McCann.
Mikayla Rubin started the inning with a single and took second base after
Alisha Marshall worked out a walk, With one out,
Angelina McGuire came to the batter's box with a chance to make an impact, and she did just that by sending a pitch to the left-center field fence for a two-run double which gave Fairfield the early lead. After Drew
Westford walked to put two runners on base again,
Makenna DiGuilio's grounder to the right side set up two more runners in scoring position. Hannah
Futo took full advantage of the chance and sent a base hit up the middle to chase home McGuire and
Westford.
From that point,
Hughen weaved some magic that kept the Pioneers off balance for the first three innings, producing just one hit through the first time through the batting order. The visitors finally seemed to solve
Hughen just a little bit, putting multiple runners on base for the first time. Katelyn Christian cashed in by sending a two-run single with two outs in the top of the fourth inning that cut the Stags lead in half. But Fairfield was resilient and plated a single run in each of its next three at-bats to push its lead to 7-3 after six innings.
Rachel
Sieber was responsible for the run in the bottom of the fourth, slicing a base hit through the left side of the infield to score
Futo which made the score 5-2. Fairfield tacked on another run in the fifth inning when McGuire ripped an RBI triple that plated Marshall, who was awarded first base earlier after the umpire called catcher's interference. The Pioneers picked up one run in its half of the sixth inning but that was quickly wiped out when Marshall hit a line-drive single to right field to score
Sieber with the Stags' final run of the game.
Hughen surrendered a run in the seventh inning and faced a bases loaded situation with two outs before she ended the game by inducing a fly ball to left field to give a 7-4 win to the Stags.
Fairfield will have to wait an extra day for its final home date of the season. Due to pending inclement weather on Wednesday, the Stags have postponed Wednesday's doubleheader with Central Connecticut State University to a single game on Thursday at Alumni Softball Field. After the Central Connecticut game, Fairfield will play six straight Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (
MAAC) games on the road to close out the
regular season.
