FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Fairfield women's tennis put up a good fight for their seniors this afternoon, but their comeback fell short as they were defeated by Sacred Heart by a score of 5-2.
The Stags started out Doubles competition with a 6-0 win as
Diana Prinos and
Anna Komer defeated Kiera Tobia and Sabrina Navarro in #2 Doubles.
Sarah Stuhlmann and
Emily Lombardi then battled hard in #1 Doubles but fell 6-4. Sacred Heart secured the Doubles point with a win in #3 Doubles over
Courtney Connors and
Gabriella Campos.
Fairfield fought their way back in Singles competition as
Jessica Pil started it off with a (6-2, 6-0) win over Sabrina Navarro in #5 Singles.
Anna Komer then took down Adrianne Alfonso (7-6, 6-2) in #4 Singles. Senior
Sarah Stuhlmann did not go down without a fight as she went three sets against Brianne Lauria but ultimately fell (2-6, 6-2, 3-6) in #1 Singles.
Diana Prinos and
Courtney Connors also went three sets in their losses in #2 Singles and #6 Singles respectively.
"Senior Day is always a bittersweet day" said Head Coach
Jeff Bricker. "The women went out and fought hard today. We just couldn't quite complete the comeback. Anna had a great day winning both singles and doubles and Jess was dominant in singles. Sarah played her heart out today and almost pulled it out at #1 Singles. We will all miss having Sarah and Nicole out on the court each day, but it's been my honor to be their coach these past 4 years."
The Stags will return to action as they finish a three-match home stand taking on St. Francis Brooklyn on Saturday at 12 P.M. at the Walsh Athletic Center tennis courts. Fairfield will have one more regular season home match on Tuesday, April 17 when they face Quinnipiac.
