ALBANY, N.Y. -- The Fairfield University men's basketball team will continue its quest for an NCAA tournament bid tonight as the team will play Iona College for the 2018 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Tournament championship tonight at the Times Union Center. The game will tip at 7 pm and will be broadcasted on ESPN.Â
The Stags advanced to the MAAC Championship game with its 74-64 win over Quinnipiac University on Sunday night. Fairfield trailed only twice during the game, both times were one-point deficits in the first and second half. On both occasions, Fairfield's
Jesus Cruz put Fairfield back in front, using a three-point play in the first half and a jumper in the second half.
Ferron Flavors Jr. posted a team-high 21 points and added 11 rebounds in the win, while
Tyler Nelson added 19 points with three assists in his 38 minutes of work.
Cruz also reached double figures with 11 points and joined Flavors Jr. as the two Stags to play all 40 minutes. Fairfield was especially effective at the free throw line, shooting 95.5 percent (21 of 22) with Flavors responsible for seven of those charity tosses.
Nelson continues to lead the conference in scoring with his 22.1 scoring average, while Flavors Jr. saw his scoring average improve to 12.4 points every forty minutes. Nelson and Flavors Jr. are both over 90 three pointers for the season as Flavors Jr. made four against Quinnipiac to raise his total to 93. Nelson picked up three more three points which gives him 98 for the year.
Jonathan Kasibabu collected eight rebounds last night which improved his season average to 5.5 per game.
The Gaels earned their ticket to the MAAC Championship game with its 65-62 come-from-behind win against Saint Peter's. Iona trailed by 10 points at halftime, scoring just 20 points, before coming back in the second half by 64 percent from the field (14 of 22) and 67 percent from three-point range (6 of 9) over the final 20 minutes. At the heart of the team's come back was Schadrac Casimir, who scored 16 points in the second half by netting five of his seven field goal attempts. Iona used a 12-2 run over four minutes to turn a five-point deficit into a five-point lead with just over a minute to go.
Casimir finished the game with 24 points to lead all scorers, while Zach Lewis (12 points) and E.J. Crawford (10 points) also reached double figures in the game. TK Edogi added eight points, eight rebounds, and three steals to the Iona cause. Rickey McGill represents the team's top scorer with 13.7 points per game, slightly better than Crawford's 13.1 scoring average. Deyshonee Much leads all Gaels with 66 three-point field goals which helped him post 11.0 points per game. Edogi averages 7.1 rebounds per game which leads all Gaels.Â
