Stags' Last Time Out
Joe Rodrigues scored six goals to lead 11 different players that contributed a point for Fairfield this past Saturday afternoon against Penn State. However, the offensive slugfest went to the visiting Nittany Lions by a final count of 17-13.
With his six goals, Rodrigues established a new personal career high. He was one marker short of the Fairfield Lacrosse record of seven goals established by Spencer Steele in 1999 against Saint Joseph's and matched by Rob Scipioni against Vermont in 2000. The senior attackman currently leads the Stags with 19 goals and 21 total points this spring.
Also on the attack,
Jack Brennan netted his second career hat trick fueled by two man-up goals. Brennan leads the CAA and is among the nation's best on the EMO with six man-up goals this season.
Colin Burke added two goals for the Stags, with
Taylor Strough and
McKay Sheahan each netting one.
Kendall Keahey dished out the first two assists of his career this afternoon, with one helper apiece coming from the crosses of Brennan, Burke, Strough,
Dylan Beckwith,
Travis Ford,
Charlie Horning,
Drew Murray and
Bill McMenamin.
Eight in a Quarter
Fairfield's eight-goal outburst in the fourth quarter on Saturday was the Stags' highest scoring stanza since netting eight goals in the third frame of a win over Vermont on Feb. 27, 2000. In between those two occurrences, the Stags played exactly 1,000 quarters of lacrosse (not including overtime periods) without netting eight goals in a single frame.
Scouting NJIT
NJIT comes to Rafferty Stadium in search of its first win of the spring after an 0-9 start to the campaign. The Highlanders are in their fourth year as an NCAA Division I program led by Head Coach Travis Johnson.
Aaron Forster leads the NJIT attack with 21 goals and seven assists, followed by 10 goals and three helpers from Cole Robillard. Nick Marzullo has started all nine games in the cage, posting a .486 save percentage and 13.80 goals-against average in 465 minutes of action. Adam Gonzalez has shouldered the load at the faceoff X with a 38-for-108 (.352) mark on the draw.
NJIT and Fairfield have two common opponents this spring – Quinnipiac and Saint Joseph's . The Highlanders have also challenged the Stags' fellow CAA squads Delaware and UMass.
Series History
The Stags hosted and defeated NJIT, 13-6, last season in the only meeting between the two squads.
Dylan Beckwith and
Travis Ford each registered a hat trick to lead the Fairfield attack, while Aaron Forster netted four goals for the Highlanders.
