Stags For Others: Talent Show

To celebrate this time of giving and sharing, Fairfield University Athletics looks back on a year of community service by its student-athletes. Eleven stories will be featured through the end of the month, showcasing the student-athletes commitment to Service for Others.

It's only one night a year but it's an evening to which every Fairfield University student-athletes looks forward. It's a night of competitiveness, good-natured ribbing, and a strong sense of camaraderie. It's one time where the student-athletes forget about playbooks and textbooks and concentrate on entertaining fans without being on the court, on the pitch, or in the water.

The eighth-annual Fairfield University Student-Athlete Talent Show provided several hours of fun and entertainment as each team brought forth an act that may not have won any Oscars, Emmys, or Grammys, but certainly captured the appreciation of the fans who came out to support the student-athletes on this remarkable night.

Each year, the student-athletes plan the talent show and showcase their talents all to benefit a local family or organization. This year, the Stags put their talent to good use for The Bridgeport School Foundation Field of Dreams Program. The program helps raise funds for programs for the city's youth as they strive to compete with pride and integrity.

While the goal is to provide for others, the student-athletes also look forward to a night where they can compete against their peers and see who is the most talented off the field.

"I personally love the talent show," said Madison Banas, a member of the Stags women's golf team. "I think it's a fun time when we can all come together and try to show something other than athletic talent for a good cause."

The competition is friendly but make no mistake that there isn't anything but pride among the teams when they take the stage at Alumni Hall. This year, the men's rowing team captured the top spot while the men's lacrosse and the men's and women's tennis teams tied for second place. The golf teams may not have finished in the top spots but there is always next year.

"The golf teams haven't been the most creative in the past," Banas said. "But we are hoping to be the most improved and talented team out there in 2019."

In the end, the student-athletes know it's not about where the teams finish or what the act is. Rather, it's more about coming together as a group to help others in need and make an impact with their service for others.

"Sure, we are getting up there and probably getting a few laughs from our peers," Banas said. "What is truly rewarding is knowing that the five minutes that we have on stage is having a lasting impact on a family or group that is in need."

Service is an important part of the Jesuit ideal that is embraced by the Fairfield University community. The talent show may not be a traditional service project but it certainly is the most creative way for Fairfield athletics to create awareness and take care of the needs of so many who need help and support.

"I participate in service projects because I love being able to make an impact on someone's life and to make someone smile," Banas said. "It enhances my Jesuit experience here at Fairfield University in being a woman for others."
