Stags Travel to Iona on Wednesday Afternoon

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University Women's Soccer team will look to build upon their first Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) win of the season when they travel to New Rochelle, N.Y., to take on the Iona Gaels on Wednesday at 3pm. By picking up three points in their last game against Canisius, the Stags are still within striking distance of a playoff spot, two points behind sixth place with five conference matches remaining.

The Stags gained that last victory by dominating Canisius in the second half, where they picked up all four of their goals in the 4-0 win. Alex Madden scored the first two goals for the Stags to put her conference leading tally to nine. Rookie Amy Akerley also had an impressive performance as she scored a goal and recorded an assist in the match. Senior tri-captain Sara Plowman capped off the scoring with her third goal of the season. The final three scores for the Stags came within a six-minute span.

With her pair of goals against Canisius, Madden extended her conference lead with her ninth score of the year, a number that ranks 22nd in the country. The nine scores is the most by a Stag since Cassidy Boegel netted that number in 2014. Ashley Small was the last Stag to reach double figures in goals as she scored 13 in 2013. As a team, the Stags lead the MAAC in goals per game (1.85) and shots per game (17.08).

Iona will enter their home match with an 0-5-1 conference mark with their last draw coming against Canisius on Sept. 29. The reigning MAAC Rookie of the Week Faith Preziosi leads the team with five goals after netting a pair against Rider a couple of games ago. Emma Havrilla has played nearly 1200 minutes in net for the Gaels and holds a 1.50 goals against average and a .750 save percentage.

The Stags will return to the Lessing Field pitch to open up their final homestand of the season when they celebrate Senior Day on Saturday night against Monmouth at 7pm.
