Box Score PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Fairfield University field hockey team scored an early goal before Providence College was able to tally a pair of first-half goals to earn a 2-1 decision over the Stags in non-conference action. The loss sets Fairfield's overall record at 10-3 while the Friars improved to 8-6 overall.
The Stags took advantage of a turnover deep in the Providence final third and converted that chance into the game's first goal.
Kaley McMullen took control of the ball just outside the circle and carried it a few yards before finding
Emma Matlach in the center of the circle. She sent a pass through a pair of defenders directly to Matlach's stick, who finished the play in just the fifth minute of play.
Providence was able to tie the game about 10 minutes later after securing a penalty corner. The Friars restarted play to the top of the circle where Maddie Babineau collected the insertion and sent the ball back toward the left post. Freshman Amanda Collins found open space at the left post and was able to redirect Babineau's pass into the near corner at the 14:33 mark.
The Friars were able to take their first lead of the game with less than three minutes remaining in the half as Mary O'Reilly was able to register what proved to be the game-winning goal. Her initial shot hit the goal post but bounced directly back to her. She corralled the rebound and pushed the ball back toward goal, beating the goalkeeper to the near corner at the 32:22 mark.
Providence finished the game with more attempts at goal, outshooting Fairfield by a 13-9 count.
Zoe Rosen made six saves for Fairfield, while Lydia Rice was responsible for five stops in the Friars' goal.
Fairfield continues its three-game road swing on Friday, October 12 with a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) game against Rider University. Game time is scheduled for 7 pm.
