NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – The Fairfield University Women's Soccer team surrendered three goals in the opening 11 minutes and could not rally all the way back as they dropped a 3-2 contest to Iona.
After conceding two of those goals in the first three minutes,
Liz Dumas cut the deficit in half as she headed in a free kick from
Gabby Diodati to put the score at 2-1. The score was Dumas' third of the year while Diodati picked up her conference leading sixth assist. For Iona, Amber Crispin netted both of the early tallies with Andrea Ferrer picking up the helper.
The momentum was short lived for the Stags (6-6-2, 1-3-2 MAAC) with Iona's (3-11-1, 1-5-1 MAAC) pair of Cripsin and Ferrer at the heart of the action. This time, it was Ferrer to net the score as she accepted the pass from Crispin and converted a left footed strike to put the score at 3-1, just 11 minutes into the match.
After 11 minutes of goal scoring action, neither side would find the back of the net for the next 77 minutes of game action.
Alex Madden stopped the scoring drought and extended her MAAC lead to 10 goals as she ran down a long pass from
Amy Akerley and hit it into the right side of the net.
The Stags looked to get back into the game before Madden's last minute goal but were turned away by Iona's Emma Havrilla, who made five saves in the second half while facing 11 shots. Madden had three shots on target as well as
Jenny Jacobs and
Stephanie Tsangaris.
Fairfield will return home for the final homestand of the 2018 season when they host Monmouth on Senior Day on Saturday at 7pm.
