FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- After logging nearly 6,000 miles to play a pair of games last weekend, the Fairfield University men's soccer team has a much quicker trip planned for its third straight road game. The Stags will make the short 150-mile round trip to West Point on Friday afternoon for a match up with Army West Point, the third time that these two programs will meet in the last four seasons. Fairfield won the 2014 season opener against the Black Knights while the two teams battled to a 1-1 draw in 2015.
The trip to Oregon resulted in a split for Head Coach
Carl Rees and his team, posting a 2-1 win over Pac-12 opponent Oregon State before falling to 15th-ranked Portland. Freshman
Don-Junior Bobe and senior
Angus Hastings provided the goals in the win over Oregon State, which earned a berth to the Hensor/Zaher Nike Classic All-Tournament team for the both student-athletes. With the longest trip of the season behind them, the Stags will now concentrate on preparing for more local fare over the Labor Day weekend. The four-day weekend will include a pair of games which begins with Fairfield heading to West Point on Friday.
Army West Point won its first two games and has yet to allow a goal in 2017. The Black Knights opened the year with a 1-0 win over San Diego at home before beating Stony Brook by a 3-0 count on the road. Rex Epps has posted a goal in each of the team's first two games, including the game winner against San Diego which came in the 100th minute of play. He tallied the team's third goal in the Stony Brook win after Shaban Abousaud and Keenan O'Shea found the back of the net earlier in the contest. Goalkeeper Justin Stoll has been in the goal for all 189 minutes of play this year. The sophomore has faced 18 shots this season which led to four saves in his two starts.
Following the Army West Point match, the Stags men's soccer team will play its home opener on September 4 against Lafayette at Lessing Field. The game is slated for 7 pm.
