Box Score PORTLAND, Ore. -- The Fairfield University men's soccer team ended its two-game run through the state of Oregon with a 6-0 loss at the University of Portland on Sunday night. The Stags ended the weekend with a split, defeating Oregon State on Friday night before Sunday's final score.
The Pilots, which lost their season opener to UNLV, broke through in the
16th minute when forward Benji Michel accepted a pass from Rey Ortiz and released a shot from inside the box that beat the goalkeeper for a 1-0 advantage. Michel would play an active role over the next 10 minutes as the sophomore would post two more goals during that time frame.
The second goal was a result of another combination with Ortiz, who sent a cross to the center of the box which Michel redirected with a header to the left side of the goal. The score would push to 3-0 when Michel controlled a pass from Spencer Myers, who sent a long cross into the box which Michel finished about three yards from goal. Portland managed one more goal by the half as Jason Romero tallied his first goal of the season off a one-two
collaboration from Erik
Edwardson and Eric De
Graaf.
Romero would add two more goals in the second half, the first of which came just 33 seconds into the play. Ortiz set up the goal for his third assist of the night, which Romero secured and unleashed a shot that caught the right side of the goal. He ended the night with the team's sixth goal as the Stags were called for a foul inside the box and Romero finished the penalty kick for the game's final goal.
The Stags managed two shots in the game with freshman defender Jonas
Vergin and rookie forward Don
Junior-Bobe being credited for the attempts. Gordon
Botterill played the first 51 minutes in the Fairfield goal, coming away with six saves during his time.
Jack Robinson finished out the final 38-plus minutes and made one save for the Stags.
Fairfield returns to the pitch on Friday, September 1 when it completes its three-game run of road games at Army West Point. Game time is scheduled for 12:30 pm.
