Men's Basketball Prepares For Houston On Wednesday

Game Notes

FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- The frequent flyer miles continue to build for the Fairfield University men's basketball team as the Stags will boarded another plane on Tuesday. The team landed in Houston for its Wednesday matchup with the Cougars, but there is one twist to this trip. Fairfield and Houston will play the game at 11 am (12 noon ET) as part of the Cougars' Education Day which will include the attendance of elementary school students from around the area. Fans can listen to the game on WVOF or watch on ESPN3.

With games in Indiana and Ohio already behind them, the Stags will concentrate on playing a game in Texas on Wednesday, the team's sixth straight game away from campus. Fairfield already faced a nationally-ranked team in Purdue during this road swing, and now looks to play a Houston team that has won five straight contests.

The Stags come off a 78-76 setback at Wagner, giving the Stags a pair of setbacks by a total of three points in its last two contests. The Stags also were edged, by Wright State by a 67-66 count on November 26. In last Friday's game, neither Fairfield or Wagner led by more than six points at any point of the game as the game featured 13 tied scores and 12 lead changes.

Tyler Nelson led all scorers with 22 points in addition to his eight rebounds and four assists. Kevin Peterson came off the bench to post a personal best 17 points with four rebounds, while Omar El-Sheikh made his collegiate debut with 11 points in 24 minutes of work. Nelson remains the team's top scorer with 20 points per game, which places third among the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) scoring leaders. Ferron Flavors Jr. continues to find success as a reserve after starting the first four games of the season, nettiing 12.3 points per contest.

The game has special meaning for senior Jerome Segura, who returns to his hometown of Houston for this game. The senior continues to move closer to becoming one of the top 10 assist leaders in school history, needing 54 to surpass Johnnie Jones '94 who collected 413 during his four year stay.

The Cougars registered their fifth straight victory with a commanding 91-65 win over Arkansas in Houston. After winning close games over Liberty (68-66) and Wake Forest (78-73), Houston has posted back-to-back double digit wins to improve its overall record to 6-1. Devin Davis recorded a double-double with 28 points and 10 rebounds, one of four double-figure scorers for the Cougars against Arkansas. Davis improved his scoring average to 12.9 points per contest following his performance over the weekend, but still trails Rob Gray in the scoring column.

Gray is netting 21.5 points every forty minutes despite coming off an 11-point eff ort against Arkansas which is his season low this year. Gray leads the team in practically every statistical category, including three-point field goal percentage (.452) and free throw percentage (.906). Davis represents the team's top rebounder, collecting 7.7 per game which includes two 10-rebound efforts this season (Wake Forest & UIW).

Following the Houston game, Fairfield has one more road game on the docket before finally earning a home game against Old Dominion University on December 17 at Alumni Hall. Tickets for the game can be purchased through the Fairfield University athletic ticket web site.
