FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- The Fairfield University men's basketball team will play the final game of its three-game home stand when it hosts Saint Peter's University on Thursday night at Webster Bank Arena. The meeting will be the only one between these two Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC), joining
Canisius College on
Fairfield's schedule as a one-game match up in 2017-18.
Fairfield owns a 3-0 record at their off -campus home facility, defeating Penn, Loyola Maryland, and New Hampshire. The Stags followed the on-court exploits of
Tyler Nelson, who recorded a season high 31 points in the win over New Hampshire. The Stags trailed by as many as nine points in the first half but rallied to take a five-point halftime lead. Nelson took over from that point, scoring the first six points of the second half which sent him on his way to a 21-point second half. The Stags also received double-digit efforts from
Ferron Flavors Jr. (13 points) and Jonathan
Kasibabu (10 points).
Nelson improved his team-leading scoring average to 21.0 points per game while Flavors Jr.is next in line with 11.6 points every forty minutes despite coming off the bench in each of the last seven games.
Kasibabu's 10 points against UNH represented the junior's fourth double-figure scoring game but the first since his season-high 15 points against Gardner-Webb on November 25.
The Peacocks come into Thursday's game as the top ranked defensive team in the MAAC, placing first in scoring defense (67.2 ppg), field goal percentage defense (.410), and three-point field goal percentage defense (.292). Saint Peter's ended its non-conference season in thrilling fashion, beating St. Francis N.Y. by a 71-68 score in overtime at the Yantelli Center. Saint Peter's received 16 points from Nick Griffin, including a pair of free throws with seven seconds left in overtime that secured the victory. The win sent Saint Peter's to 6-5 overall against nonconference opponents. Samuel
Idowu led all Saint Peter's scorers with 20 points, 12 of which came from the free throw line, and was the team's top rebounder with eight caroms.
Griffin represents the team's top scorer for the season, averaging 15.8 points per game.
Davauhnte Turner is the team's other double-digit scorer with 11.5 points every forty minutes. Quinn Taylor is the team's best rebounder, averaging 7.0 per game ranks among the top five rebounders in the
MAAC. The Peacocks improved to 3-0 in games decided by four points or less.
This game will mark the 114th meeting between Fairfield and Saint Peter's, a series which dates back to the 1950-51 campaign. After the Peacocks' initial victory, Fairfield responded with a 48-45 win the following season. Saint Peter's won 11 of the first 14 meetings before Fairfield reeled off five straight wins during the early to
mid-1970s. During the 1985-86 season, the Stags pulled off a three-game sweep of Saint Peter's despite never scoring 50 points in any one of those games. Fairfield posted wins of 49-48, 46-44, and 49-47, the last of which came in the
MAAC Tournament. The highest scoring game of the series occurred at Webster Bank Arena in which the Stags edged out the Peacocks by a 109-108 score during the 2005-06 season. Saint Peter's swept last year's two-game series after the two teams split the 2015-16 meetings.
