JERSEY CITY, N.J. – Alex Madden tallied her first career multi-goal game and
Bre Cocuzzo posted her first collegiate shutout as the Fairfield University women's soccer team defeated Saint Peter's for the 25th time in their last 27 meetings with a 3-0 win. With the victory, the Stags move their conference record to over .500, with a 4-3 mark.
The Stags (6-7, 4-3 MAAC) had most of the offensive chances in the match, doubling the amount of shots for the Peacocks at 24-12. Madden needed just four minutes to get Fairfield on the board as she took in a rebound and finished in the top corner for the first score of the game. It was the second-straight match where the Stags struck in the opening five minutes.
This match would also see the first penalty kick for the Stags, as
Kelsey Burke recorded her first goal of the season in the 24th minute.
The 2-0 score line was indicative of the pace of the game, as Fairfield out-shot Saint Peter's 15-3 during the opening 45 minutes.
The second stanza was a bit closer with each side tallying nine shots, but Fairfield was the team to touch net. Once again, Madden was at the forefront when she took a pass from
Jenny Jacobs for her sixth goal of the campaign.
In her second career start, Cocuzzo stopped all six shots on target to post her first shutout. Five of those saves came in the second half.
Fairfield will now try and extend their mini-two game winning streak when they host Manhattan on Saturday night at 7pm. This will also be Fairfield's Herd For A Cure match, with donations at the game benefitting breast cancer research.
