Field Hockey Downed by Providence in Final Seconds

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Fairfield University field hockey came up on the wrong end of a 1-0 margin as they fell to Providence at Lennon Family Field.

Goalkeepers Caitlin Gilligan and Megan Guilbert kept the game locked at 0-0 for 69 minutes as the two teams competed in a defensive battle.

With just 14 seconds remaining in the game, Natalie Mitchell spun around her defender deep in the circle and netted the game winning unassisted goal.

The Stags outshot the Friars 15-10 and tallied eight shots on goal.  They were also awarded nine penalty corners to Providence's eight.

Caitlin Gilligan made five saves in the game.

Fairfield will have four days off before they return to University Field on Friday, at 4 p.m. to take on Monmouth for their second MAAC game of the season.  They will then travel to New York to take on Albany on Sunday, at 1 p.m.
